In this part, we are going to discuss the Lancashire County Cricket Club or the Lancashire CCC. Lancashire CCC is definitely one of the best cricket teams in England, currently playing in the English County Championship. As the name suggests, this team represents Lancashire.

The Lancashire CCC was first founded in 1864. They won the first Champion County in 1881, and shared three more titles in 1879, 1882, and 1889. Lancashire CCC showed superb performances throughout this particular period of the team’s history, becoming a serious rival to many other cricket clubs competing in the same championship.

Until today, the Lancashire CCC booked a total of 8 championship wins, including one shared win acquired in 1950. Unfortunately, they are not doing well the past couple of years. The team’s last victory was in 1999, when they took home the Pro40 League trophy and champion title.

The current team coach, Peter Moores, is former County Cricket player himself. Although the team is not performing superbly just yet, Moores managed to enhance the overall performance of Lancashire CCC substantially.

We all know that Lancashire CCC enjoyed their golden era in the 1920s to 1930s period. The team performed really well in that period, showing spectacular plays and winning a lot of honors. It is just a matter of time before Lancashire CCC returns to their glory days. Their home, the Old Trafford Cricket Ground, is among the best there is. The team also has proper financial support from their earnings, strengthening the foundations to be the best even further.

Players in Profile: Wayne Rooney http://www.westsport.co.uk/07/players-in-profile-wayne-rooney/ http://www.westsport.co.uk/07/players-in-profile-wayne-rooney/#comments Thu, 15 Jul 2010 21:26:34 +0000 admin http://www.westsport.co.uk/?p=12 Born on October 24th, 1985, Wayne Mark Rooney is now known to be one of the top British football players. His 1.78 m tall posture, his amazing speed and agility, superb stamina that can last through the entire match and several other positive traits – including his amazing shots and power – are among the things that place him as the best striker in Manchester United today.

Rooney’s career started right after he showed spectacular performances when he was in the Liverpool Schoolboys. He was then signed by Everton to join the team’s youth squad, scoring a memorable goal in a Youth FA Cup match right away – he revealed his shirt saying “Once a Blue, always a Blue” worn under his jersey.

His talents and amazing ability to score even when the odds are against him caught the eyes of several other top teams. Newcastle United and Manchester United were among the two teams competing for Rooney’s agreement for a transfer back then. Everton also demanded the transfer to worth no less than £50 million; Manchester United eventually won the bidding war and snagged Rooney for a transfer fee of £25.6 million.

Rooney joined Manchester United in 2004, and his career has been superb ever since. His international career is not to be taken lightly as well, performing superbly in several England international football matches. In Euro 2004, he booked a record of being the youngest scorer in competition history after scoring two goals against Switzerland. His career total is now 148 goals – Premier League goals only – and we will surely see that number goes up real quick in the future.

The Manchester/Liverpool Rivalry http://www.westsport.co.uk/06/the-manchesterliverpool-rivalry/ http://www.westsport.co.uk/06/the-manchesterliverpool-rivalry/#comments Tue, 15 Jun 2010 21:26:01 +0000 admin http://www.westsport.co.uk/?p=10 Both Manchester United and Liverpool are noted – and claim themselves – to be the best teams in British football. They are indeed the most accomplished teams in the British football history so far. Their rivalry is simply inevitable, competing to claim the title of being THE best football team in England.

Both Manchester United and Liverpool gathered 53 major honors and championship titles so far. Manchester United and Liverpool both collected 18 Premier League (First Division) victories so far, although Manchester United won 11 FA Cup while Liverpool won only 7. Liverpool has 7 League Cup victories in their records – Manchester only has 4. The list goes on and on, marking the true competitions between the two major teams.

What’s interesting to see about Manchester/Liverpool rivalry is the fact that everyone is enjoying it. Meetings between the two teams are always scheduled during the day to discourage avid fans from drinking before the game; there were several cases of hooliganism whenever the two teams collide in a football match. The schedule is set that way also to ignite better media exposures to the match.

There were several interesting moments along the history of these two teams. The past 5 matches between the two teams are all very interesting to see. Their Premier League match in Old Trafford on March 28th, 2008 ended with Manchester United scoring three goals without return. It was a big blow for Liverpool, but the team retaliated with a 2-1 match result for Liverpool when the match was played in Anfield. The rivalry between these two major teams will only get more exciting from here.

The City of Manchester Stadium http://www.westsport.co.uk/05/the-city-of-manchester-stadium/ http://www.westsport.co.uk/05/the-city-of-manchester-stadium/#comments Sun, 02 May 2010 21:25:57 +0000 admin http://www.westsport.co.uk/?p=8 The idea of building City of Manchester Stadium was first introduced around 1990. Back then, Manchester was preparing to host the 2000 Summer Olympics and building the stadium was part of the city’s general plan to prepare venue for the event. After the Summer Olympics was awarded to Sydney, Australia, in 1993, the stadium plan then used to bid on the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

In 1996, City of Manchester Stadium competed against Wimbley to gain funding for national stadium; Wimbley won the funds and get restored as well as improved later on that year. The development of City of Manchester Stadium was finally started in 1999, with Tony Blair – the current Prime Minister – laying the first foundation stone.

The 2002 Commonwealth Games was successful, placing City of Manchester Stadium well in everyone’s mind. The stadium was then modified to suit football matches, following Manchester City’s decision to use the stadium as their home ground.

On August 10th, 2003, Manchester City played the first public football match in this stadium against Barcelona; it was a friendly match, yet everyone still remembers that moment until today. When England face Japan in the World Cup qualification, City of Manchester Stadium became the 50th stadium in England to host England international football.

There is no doubt that City of Manchester Stadium is a spectacular sporting ground. It has a seating capacity of 47,726 – originally designed for 80,000 capacity before then reduced to keep the development within budget – and it uses the famous Desso GrassMaster to provide the best ground for football matches.

About the Wigan Warriors http://www.westsport.co.uk/04/about-the-wigan-warriors/ http://www.westsport.co.uk/04/about-the-wigan-warriors/#comments Fri, 16 Apr 2010 21:25:19 +0000 admin http://www.westsport.co.uk/?p=6 The Wigan Warriors Rugby League Football Club, or Wigan Warriors in short, is a professional rugby league club in Wigan. The team is now competing in the Super League and has won several honors and titles since it was established in 1872. It was the members of Wigan Cricket Club that first founded the Wigan Warriors.

Wigan Warriors as a team has its own ups and downs over different periods. Still, they are noted as a serious competitor in many leagues and championships they compete in. They have won no less than 18 championships, 17 Challenge Cups, and 3 World Club Champions titles. It is obvious that Wigan Warriors is still a team to be feared, finishing 6th in last year’s Super League season.

Michael Maguire is the one leading the team as coach since October 2009. Maguire and the way he handles the team is what Wigan Warriors need to regain its glory. It would be interesting to see what the team can do under Maguire’s leadership.

Wigan Warriors won many awards along the team’s history. The most interesting one is of course the BBC Sports Team of the Year award in 1994, given to Wigan Warriors for showing spectacular performances and utter sportsmanship.

Carrying the rooted Wigan traditions, powered by thousands of fanatics supporting the team at all time, it is very much possible to see Wigan Warriors rises back to its glory this season. They won the championship 7 times in a row from 1989 to 1995, and it is just a matter of time before they do it again.
